Fill in the Blanks
The Fill in the Blanks content type presents a text with gaps that the student types into. The AI generates the text and its blanks in one of three modes: classic, with a support image and automatic checking, or as a grammar test.
AI-generated configuration
| Setting | Description | Possible values | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mode | How the activity is presented and checked. | Classic / With image and automatic checking / Grammar test | Classic |
| Automatic checking | Each blank is corrected as soon as it is completed, without pressing the check button. | Enabled only in the image mode and the grammar test mode | Disabled (classic mode checks with the button) |
| Support image | Illustration accompanying the text. | Generated only in the image mode, and only with the Generate images option of the AI modal enabled | No image |
| Retry button | Lets the student try the activity again. | Enabled | Enabled |
| Show solution button | Reveals the correct answer of every blank. | Enabled | Enabled |
Generated content
- A text with each blank carrying its correct answer inside the passage.
- In the image mode, the generated support image alongside the text.
Rules and behavior
- Only the image mode generates an image, and only when the Generate images option is enabled; with that option disabled, the image mode degrades to classic.
- The classic and grammar test modes never show an image in the content, even when image generation is enabled.
- If the image fails in the image mode, generation is retried: the activity must not be delivered without its image in that mode.
- Automatic checking is only activated in the image and grammar test modes; in classic mode the student checks with the button.
- The activity is scored, and the result integrates with the Moodle gradebook.
Example prompts
Without syllabus
A classic-mode activity where the student types each concept into its gap and checks with the button:
I need an H5P fill-in-the-blanks activity for the Introduction to Programming course. A text explaining what a variable, a loop, and a conditional are, with those concepts as blanks for the student to type.
An activity with a generated support image and automatic checking on every blank:
Prepare an H5P fill in the blanks with an image and automatic checking for the Cell Biology course: a text on the parts of the cell (nucleus, membrane, cytoplasm, and mitochondria) accompanied by a supporting illustration.
With syllabus
A grammar-test-mode activity with sentences drawn from a unit of the uploaded document, corrected automatically and without an image:
I want an H5P fill in the blanks in grammar test mode with sentences taken from unit 3 of the syllabus I uploaded, where the student completes the correct word or form according to what was covered in that unit.
