Overview

Tutor AI adds a course-level chat assistant to Moodle. It appears as a floating avatar on course pages and opens a chat drawer where users can ask questions and receive streaming AI responses in real time. Tutor AI is designed to be:

  • Context-aware: it uses the current course/activity context to answer more accurately.
  • Role-aware: it adapts responses depending on whether the user is a student or a teacher.
  • Fast and interactive: responses are streamed (SSE) so users don’t have to wait for a full response to appear.

Tutor AI depends on the Datacurso AI Provider (aiprovider_datacurso) and requires the provider to be installed and licensed. Tutor AI reads the license from the provider; no additional configuration is required in Tutor AI itself.

How it answers

Tutor AI answers from the course knowledge it prepares for the user who is asking, filtered to what that user is allowed to see. This knowledge includes the course structure, activities and due dates. The administrator decides whether the tutor may also use the course material written by teachers and the student’s own grades; both are off by default. There is no content synchronization or indexing step to run.

Chat history is private per user: each user has their own conversation in each course, and teachers cannot read students’ conversations. Conversations are deleted automatically after the number of days set by the administrator (7 by default).

Where the avatar appears

The floating avatar is shown on course pages (course home and activity pages). It does not appear on:

  • Quiz activity pages
  • The site front page
  • Embedded or popup layouts (for example, H5P content inside an iframe)

What it’s for

  • Reduce repetitive questions and support load in courses
  • Help learners stay on track without leaving Moodle
  • Provide guidance aligned with the course content and learning flow

Supported languages

Tutor AI supports: es, en, de, fr, pt, id, ru.
