What this is
This guide helps you write prompts to:
- generate a meaningful forum reply, and/or
- grade participation and produce feedback.
This page shows the range you can use in prompts:
- one conservative example (simple and safe)
- one more complete example (still conservative, but more specific)

Prompt templates
Template A — Write a forum reply
Write a forum reply to the student post below.
Tone: {tone}.
Goal: {goal}.
Include 1 question that invites deeper thinking.
Keep it concise.
Example (conservative)
Reply only to the most recent student message in the thread.
Tone: friendly, respectful, and motivating.
Structure:
1) 1 short line showing you understood.
2) A clear reply (2–5 sentences).
3) 1 simple example.
4) End with 1 concrete question to keep the discussion going.
Rules:
- Do not include external links.
- If a key detail is missing, ask 1 specific question.
Example (more complete, still conservative)
Reply only to the most recent student message in the thread.
Tone: supportive and teacher-like.
Goal: help the student connect their idea to the course concept.
Constraints:
- Keep it under 120 words.
- Use plain language.
- Include 1 short example.
End with:
- 1 guiding question that invites deeper reasoning.
Rules:
- No external links.
- Do not invent facts; ask for clarification if needed.
Template B — Grade participation
Grade the student’s forum participation.
Scale: 0–100.
Criteria:
- Relevance to topic
- Quality of reasoning
- Respectful interaction
- Use of course concepts
Give actionable feedback.
Example (conservative)

Focus on: relevance, reasoning, and respectful interaction.
Give 2 concrete suggestions for improvement.
Keep the feedback short.
Example (more complete, still conservative)

- Depth (explains the “why”)
- Uses a concrete example
- Respectful and constructive tone
Feedback format:
